Ride for Dad

Picture
“If I had gotten checked this time last year,
I wouldn't be planning my own funeral today”.
Charlie Pester, Kingston educator and role model

That’s the quote that started the Motorcycle Ride for Dad. This single sentence serves as an inspiration for the hundreds of people across Canada who raise money for prostate cancer awareness and research through annual local rides.

When Garry Janz heard the words of Charlie Pester in 2000, he was moved to do something to raise awareness and funds for the fight against prostate cancer. Along with Byron Smith of the Ottawa Police Association, Janz organised the first Ride for Dad in Ottawa. That first ride involved some 80 motorcyclists and raised just over $20,000 for the Ottawa Regional Cancer Center.

The Ottawa Ride became an annual event and experienced phenomenal growth each year. Soon, other cities were requesting similar events be held in their communities. From its humble beginnings, the Ride for Dad has grown to include 31 cities across Canada and plans are underway for several more. Today, more than 100,000 men, women and children have been involved…raising over $7,000,000 to fight prostate cancer!

For the fourth year in a row, Ian Brown-Sweeting will be riding his Vespa in the fundraiser M/C Ride for Dad for Prostate Cancer Research on June 4. In fact, he has received a bronze pin for his efforts, because over the last three years, he’s raised over $1000.

His goal this year is to raise another $1000. If you want to help him achieve his target, you can go to http://www.motorcycleridefordad.org to make a pledge. Just click on the ‘Pledge’ link, chose a rider by selecting first name, then Halifax, Nova Scotia and type in ‘Ian’. He would very much appreciate your help and donation to help fight this disease, which not only affects men, but women as well.

Postcode lottery

New research has found that motorists face a ‘postcode lottery’ when it comes to the policing of speed limits on British roads. RoadPilot (supplier of GPS speed camera data) found that speeding riders are up to 100 times more likely to be caught in Greater London than in some other areas of the country.
The study identified that Greater London now has 16 per cent of the UK’s roadside speed cameras, more than Scotland, Wales and Ireland combined.  The West Midlands, which includes the actively-policed city of Birmingham, has the second most strictly-enforced speed limits (with 7.4 per cent of all cameras), followed by West Yorkshire (6.7 per cent), Lancashire (5.7 per cent), and Staffordshire (5.0 per cent).
While the decision taken by some councils to cut funding for speed cameras has hit the headlines in recent weeks, research by RoadPilot indicates that these changes will affect just 3 per cent of cameras in Britain.
“It is perhaps to be expected that London, as the UK’s largest city, would have the highest concentration of speed cameras, but the extent of the differences in number of speed cameras around the UK is very surprising,” comments James Flynn OBE, CEO of RoadPilot.
“The recent change to the way that speed cameras are funded has certainly affected some areas of the UK, but it is important to keep in mind the bigger picture.  Britain’s speed limits remain the most heavily policed in the world, and the recent cuts will only affect a tiny proportion of the country’s more than 5,500 speed cameras.
“Given that more than 56 per cent of all of the nation’s speed cameras monitor 30 mph limits, compared with only 3.6 per cent sited on roads with 70 mph limits, riders don’t necessarily have to be ‘driving fast’ to risk collecting a fine and licence endorsement points.  With so many distractions on our roads, riders need all the help they can get to keep fully aware of local limits,” concludes Flynn.
RoadPilot’s extensive database of UK and international speed camera locations is principally available to consumers via RoadPilot Mobile – the firm’s self-built speed camera location application for GPS Smart phones – which is now compatible with all 26 Nokia GPS handsets.  It can also be accessed through the ‘combined speed camera and traffic alert’ service available as a downloadable option with the Nokia’s Maps 3.0 satellite navigation software.
Spanning 26 countries around the world, RoadPilot’s database is endorsed through licensing agreements with some of the world’s leading organisations in the personal navigation, online mapping, routing and printed map sectors.

  Lisa Heathcote, RIP

Picture
Australian scooterist Lisa Heathcote died on 7 March 2011 after being involved in a collision with a 4WD vehicle. Lisa was a member of the Melbourne Crusaders SC and was riding pillion at the time of the accident; the scooter rider is recovering in hospital.
The funeral was held on the 17 March and the procession was led by members of Lisa’s club, Melbourne Crusaders SC. The club has established the ‘Lisa Heathcote Memorial Fund’ to help take care of Lisa’s 11-year old son Massey.
Lisa was a very popular member of the club (in fact a founder member) and carried the Membership Card 111. She made friends easily and was always one of the first to welcome new members to the club. She attended every club event and frequently wore Mod gea, including mini-skirts with white boots and many other glamorous outfits; she was the life and soul of every Crusaders party and will be greatly missed.
Lisa’s picture has featured in past issues of Classic Scooterist Scene magazine - the most recent was a picture of her standing next to Steve Bardsley’s Lambretta LI 150 with the Union Jack front mudguard, which was published in the Feb/Mar 2011 issue of Classic Scooterist Scene in the 2010 Mods v Rockers day article. The photograph (pictured here) shows Lisa ‘hamming it up’ and drinking a glass of champagne - so typically Lisa.
Lisa will be sadly missed by all them of the Melbourne Crusaders SC and the many Australian Scooterists who were so fond of her.
Steve Bardsley
Melbourne Crusaders SC

Although we didn’t know Lisa personally here at Scooterider, we extend our condolences to Lisa, her family and friends.

New V5C log book

AVCIS, the Association of Chief Police Officer’s Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service, has applauded the Government’s decision to introduce a new version of the V5C document. This move follows the theft of a large number of blank V5C vehicle ‘Registered Keeper’ documents in 2006 and there is concern that there may be a significant number of these log books still in circulation. To date, AVCIS has recovered in excess of 1,330 vehicles with a value of more than £15 million.
All cars registered from 15 August will receive the new V5C. From the middle of next year, the document will also be issued to all remaining vehicles when they are re-licensed or declared to be off the road.
Head of AVCIS, Detective Chief Inspector Mark Hooper said: “AVCIS has been working very closely with the DVLA to redesign the new V5C, which also now contains enhanced security measures and a clear reminder that a V5C should not be considered as proof of ownership. We expect that phasing out the old log books will reduce the chances of stolen cars being cloned and sold on to innocent motorists, who presently lose their money and their newly purchased car.
“We will continue to monitor forgeries using the old style documents and arrest the people responsible but we urge motorists to follow our advice when buying second hand cars. Above all, remember the old adage that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is!” added DCI
Hooper.
The stolen V5Cs are recognisable as having a slightly different background colour on the Notification of Permanent Export (V5C/4) tear-off slip on the second page, which looks mauve on the front and pink on the reverse. On legitimate documents they should be mauve on both sides.
